Under article 115 of the Police Act (R.S.Q.,
c. P-13.1), to be hired as a police officer a person must
meet the following requirements:
- Be a Canadian citizen (to get more information on this
requirement, consult Citizenship
and Immigration Canada's site);
- Be of good moral character (french version);
- Not have been found guilty, in any place, of an act
or omission defined in the Criminal Code (Revised Statutes
of Canada, 1985, chapter C-46) as an offence, or of an
offence referred to in section 183 of that Code under
one of the Acts listed therein ;
Paragraph 3 of Article 4 of the Training Plan Regulation of the École nationale de police du Québec is to the same effect as Paragraph 3 of Article 115 of the Police Act.
- Hold a diploma awarded by the École nationale de police
du Québec or meet the standards of equivalence established
by by-law by the school (Admission

).

In accordance with the Police Act, all police recruits
are required to pass the basic Patrol Officer Training Program
at the École nationale de police du Québec.
Listed below are the different training
paths to becoming a Québec police officer:
- Obtain a Diploma of Collegial Studies from one of the
12 colleges
(french) of the
province offering the police technology program;
Register
for the school's annual admissions proceedings;
Successfully complete the basic Patrol Officer Training
Program there.
- Hold a promise of employment from a Québec police force;
Obtain an Attestation of Collegial Studies in the 30-week
police technology program;
Successfully complete
the basic Patrol Officer Training Program at the school.
Note: In order to obtain a promise of employment from a
Québec police force, candidates themselves must contact the
organization of interest to them. Only certain organizations
offer promises of employment.

Police officers who have been trained in an other canadian province may become police officers in Québec
through obtaining an attestation of equivalence from the
school (see The
Training Plan Regulation of the École nationale de
police du Québec (c. 15 to 19).

Foreign citizens who wish to become police officers in
Québec must first acquire Canadian citizenship. After, they
must follow the different training paths to becoming a Québec
police officer (see Procedure for Québec's candidates).
