About the school |
|
The École nationale de police du Québec was established on September 1, 2000. It replaced the Institut de police du Québec in accordance with the Police Act.
The new school is an integrated police training centre which
is part of a training continuum. In also being a think tank it
enjoys the participation of a large network of partners.
The school provides basic training and skills in police patrolling,
investigation and management, as well as advanced and in-service
training. It also conducts and commissions research in areas related
to police training and organizes exchanges of expertise at the
international level. A training and research commission has
been created within the school. It advises the governing board
on matters pertaining to police training and keeps them abreast
of research developments in the field. Furthermore, police forces
must establish a professional training plan, update and forward
it annually to the school.
Because of its partnership with the colleges, its programs founded
on the competency-based approach, its virtual learning strategy,
the involvement of multidisciplinary teams and the training content
and format, the school has gained the reputation of being one
of the best basic police training schools in the world.

It is the mission of the school, as a think tank and an integrated police training centre, to ensure the pertinence, quality and coherence of all activities related to police training.
It is the exclusive responsibility of the school to provide the basic training that gives access to police patrolling, police investigation and police management functions, with the exception of training provided as part of a program leading to a Diploma of Collegial Studies or an Attestation of Collegial Studies in police technology.
In addition, through its qualifying professional training programs,
the school offers advanced and in-service training designed to
meet the needs of the various police forces in Québec.
The school also has the mandate to conduct or commission research and studies in areas related to police work that may have an impact on police training, and to publish and disseminate the results.
The school may also approve professional training activities
that have been developed outside the school which may be incorporated
into its programs or receive its accreditation.
The school advises police forces and associations representing their members concerning professional training matters. It also encourages cooperation and collaboration among the various institutions that offer police training, and keeps the Minister of Public Security informed in this regard.
The school may, with the joint authorization of the Minister of Education and the Minister of Public Security and on the conditions they determine, develop and offer college-level professional training programs and university-level programs.
